- Commemorating the 125th milestone of the Harzquer-Bahn and Brockenbahn.
This weekend, the 125th anniversary of the Brockenbahn and Harzquerbahn is being celebrated with a massive bash in Wernigerode. The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, running both railways, has organized a yard festival on the premises of their new steam locomotive workshop. As stated by the company, this event is planned to be a "delightful family festival boasting a vibrant children's and stage program." The festivities commence on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
Some of the notable events include a retrospective vehicle display, a miniature railway, and behind-the-scenes workshop tours. A significant attraction is the 125-year-old steam engine "Hoya," managed by the German Railway Association. On Saturday, it will serve as the lead engine for the regular traditional train from Wernigerode to the 1141-meter-high Brocken, offering cab rides the following day. This locomotive was named after the Hoya-Syke-Asendorf narrow-gauge railway, to which it was delivered in 1899.
Following suit, in 1899, the first train journeyed to the 1141-meter-high Brocken. Furthermore, the entire narrow-gauge rail traffic of the Harzquerbahn, linking Nordhausen (Thuringia) and Wernigerode (Saxony-Anhalt), commenced its operations. Prior to this, the Harzquerbahn had already operated on specific sections.
Visitors can enjoy a glass of red wine at the festive wine tent, serving various beverages, as they take a break from exploring the vehicle display. After the thrilling cab ride on the 125-year-old steam engine "Hoya" on Sunday, passengers might unwind with a refreshing glass of red wine.
