Berlin - Comeback of the 29-euro ticket expected on July 1

The new 29-euro ticket for Berlin's public transport system is expected to be launched on July 1. "The first day of validity is expected to be July 1. An earlier introduction is not possible on the part of the transport companies," the Senate Department for Transport told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Tuesday when asked. "Advance ticket sales should start around Easter," it said. The "Tagesspiegel" had previously reported on the start date.

According to the transport administration, the 29-euro ticket will officially be called the"Berlin-Abo" to distinguish it from the nationwide Deutschlandticket, which currently costs 49 euros a month. The new Berlin ticket will be valid in the Berlin AB fare zone; connecting tickets can be purchased for journeys in the C zone.

The Senate decided to reintroduce the 29-euro ticket at the beginning of October. At the time, there was talk of a launch in the first half of 2024. The 29-euro ticket already existed once, but is extremely controversial - mainly due to its limited area of validity. In addition, the benefits in terms of transport policy are in doubt, with some transport experts fearing that money could now be lacking for public transport expansion, for example. The new state government took office with the election promise to reintroduce the offer.

The "Berlin-Abo" will be a personal ticket that can be purchased as a subscription with a minimum term of twelve months. There will be no company ticket.

According to the transport administration, the transport companies will concentrate on digital tickets in cell phone apps for advance sales in order to avoid time-consuming problems caused by the production and dispatch of many chip cards within a few days.
