Ansbach Local Court - Coffin falls into the grave and opens: Trial over invoice

An accident involving a coffin during a funeral in July 2021 has kept the Ansbach district court busy. The verdict against the widow of the buried man is now legally binding, according to the court on Wednesday. She had not wanted to pay the mortician's bill - now she has to pay after all.

When lowering the coffin into the grave, one of the pallbearers had let go of the strap, causing the coffin to fall to the ground, open up and reveal the deceased. The widow therefore did not pay the bill of around 2,300 euros. In her opinion, the straps provided by the gravedigger were too slippery.

The judges came to a different conclusion. The straps had already been used before without any accidents. The mortician had not ordered the pallbearers - colleagues of the deceased - and was therefore not liable for letting go of a strap too early.

The woman was ordered to pay the invoice amount in March 2023. She lodged an appeal against this, but later withdrew it. According to the information provided, the judgment is now legally binding.
