Coalition negotiations between CDU and SPD to begin
The coalition negotiations between the CDU and SPD for a possible new government alliance in Hesse are to begin on Wednesday. The Hessian CDU announced on Tuesday that a press statement is planned for the start of the talks in Wiesbaden in the early afternoon. CDU state leader and Minister President Boris Rhein declared at the end of last week that he wanted to start negotiations with the Social Democrats. Tuesday was initially mentioned as a possible start date for the talks.
In the past almost ten years, Hesse has been led by a black-green government. The CDU won the state elections on October 8 by a clear margin and was then able to choose between the Greens and the SPD as coalition partners. There were a whole series of exploratory talks with both possible partners. Rhein had justified his decision in favor of the Social Democrats on the grounds of greater overlap.
The Social Democrats are set to participate in the coalition negotiations alongside the CDU, aiming to form a new government alliance in Hesse. Following the Hessian CDU's victory in the state elections, various exploratory talks were conducted with both the Greens and the SPD as potential coalition partners for the governing party.
