National squad - Coach Nagelsmann confirms that Stuttgart goalkeeper Nübel will not be part of the European Championship team.
German goalkeeper Alexander Nübel won't be in his country's national team for the upcoming European Championship. At the age of 27, Nübel, who plays for VfB Stuttgart, was taken out of the final 26-player squad on Friday.
Julian Nagelsmann, the national coach, spoke shortly before the start of the last test match against Greece in Mönchengladbach on RTL, explaining that Nübel's exclusion wasn't related to his performance. He added that there were "uncertainties" regarding Leroy Sané, who was "almost 100%," sometimes "100%" while at Bayern Munich, and then all of a sudden changed. This led to the replacement of a field player and against adding a fourth goalkeeper to the team.
Nübel's elimination came as a shock since Nagelsmann had mentioned his plan to take four goalkeepers to the EM for training management reasons. With no prior international appearances and after some stellar performances in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart, Nübel's name was on the list. The goalkeeper was taken aback by his advance nomination and commented on needing to cancel a planned safari trip.
The current team composition includes 23 field players and three goalkeepers, like previous competitions. Manuel Neuer of Bayern will serve as the main goalie, with Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona) and Oliver Baumann (TSG Hoffenheim) as backups.
Stuttgart's sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth claimed Nübel is not being judged based on his quality. "Alex's time in the national team will come, I'm convinced of that," Wohlgemuth said.

Beier and Koch at the EM
Maximilian Beier, an offensive player from Hoffenheim, and Robin Koch, a defender from Eintracht Frankfurt, had been subjects of speculation regarding their possible exclusion. Nagelsmann reiterated that no player would be dropped based on their training camp performances.
Thursday evening saw Nagelsmann confirming his choices, stating he'd inform the affected party after the match against Greece before revealing the full squad. All 26 players were required by UEFA to be announced by midnight. Only injured players could be replaced before the match against Scotland on June 14, and goalkeepers might be swapped during the tournament - but only when confirmed as injured by a UEFA doctor.
