Bundesliga - Coach Bjelica: Cancellation of Bayern game has done Union good
The weather-related cancellation of the difficult away game at FC Bayern Munich last weekend did not come at a bad time for Union Berlin's new coach Nenad Bjelica. "Honestly, it was good for us to have the game called off. Because we weren't really in the best physical condition for such a tough game," the Croatian told TV channel Sky on Tuesday.
The game did not take place due to the onset of winter in the Bavarian capital and will be rescheduled for January 24 next year. "We will certainly be able to prepare better for the game in January," said the 52-year-old. "I hope that we will have one or two new players and that the injured players will also be available. Then we'll be more competitive than we would have been three days ago."
The team at the bottom of the league, who have not won a game since August, are also not at their best mentally. That's why it's an advantage to have avoided a potentially negative experience at the German champions. "Mentally, we're not in the best state," said Bjelica. "I hope that the first win will give us legs, make us more light-footed and enable us to play better soccer."
Next Saturday, Union will host Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei (3.30pm/Sky). In the relegation battle, there are then some landmark games in Bochum and against Cologne before Christmas.
