Closure plans at Goodyear: Woidke wants to fight
Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) wants to support the preservation of jobs at tire manufacturer Goodyear. The company announced on Thursday that it intends to cease production in Fürstenwalde, East Brandenburg, by the end of 2027 and cut around 750 jobs. The plant in Fulda in eastern Hesse is also affected. As the state chancellery in Potsdam announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday evening, Minister President Woidke assured Goodyear employees that the state government will fight for their industrial jobs. Immediate talks have been scheduled.
The IG BCE trade union announced protests against the closure plans and spoke of a major shock. Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs Jörg Steinbach (SPD) announced that he would make contact with the management as soon as possible and wanted to explore ways of preserving industrial jobs.
The state government is in discussions with Goodyear's suppliers to explore potential support for the tire manufacturer. Despite the closure plans, Minister-President Woidke emphasized the importance of maintaining automotive-related industries in Brandenburg.
