Sailing - Closure of Travemunde Week with fireworks
The 135th Travemunde Week ends after ten days on Sunday. Traditional fireworks mark the conclusion. According to organizers, around 1,500 participants took part with over 700 boats in this year's second largest Schleswig-Holstein sailing event after the Kiel Week. Due to the weather, only a few races took place, a spokesperson noted.
The social highlight of the Travemunde Week once again was the Regatta for the Rotspon Cup. Lübeck's Mayor Henning Schumann managed to win the race against Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Economic Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD). Schumann had stepped in at short notice for the ailing Lübeck Mayor Jan Lindenau.
The Rotspon Cup has been held since 2004 and is intended to commemorate the origin of the Travemunde Week in 1889. At that time, Hamburg merchants Hermann Wentzel and Hermann Droge were racing off Travemunde for a wager. The winner received a bottle of Lübeck Rotspon.
The 135th Travemünde Week, known as one of the major sailing events in Schleswig-Holstein, is followed by Kiel Week as the second largest. Despite the challenging weather conditions, over 1,500 sailors participated with over 700 boats. On Sunday, the festive atmosphere reached its peak as the event concluded with a spectacular display of fireworks over Travemünde.
