- Climate protesters cling to Sylt airport
Two activists from the climate initiative "Last Generation" glued themselves to the ground next to a private jet at Sylt Airport on Saturday morning. Their attempt to spray paint the plane was thwarted by quick action from airport staff.
The activists had previously cut a hole in the airport's fence to gain access to the grounds. A third activist was stopped at the fence by police and taken away.
The women were removed from the ground and also taken away in a police car. Firefighters placed two large fire trucks in front of the private jet to shield the scene from onlookers.
"Last Generation": Failure of protest "happens occasionally"
"Last Generation" had intended to spray the words "Oil kills" on the private jet. "Today's protest on Sylt didn't work out, that happens sometimes, but that doesn't mean we're stopping," said Christian Bergemann, spokesperson for Last Generation.
The action did not disrupt flight operations at Sylt Airport, according to the online flight schedule.
Paint attack at the airport in June 2023
In the opinion of the protesters, millionaires and billionaires contribute disproportionately to climate change. The owners of private jets, limousines, and superyachts would not give them up voluntarily. To reduce these emissions, laws are needed.
In June 2023, five activists from the group "Last Generation" sprayed a private jet on the airport grounds with orange paint and glued themselves to it. The public prosecutor's office in Flensburg estimated the damage to the plane alone at at least one million euros at the time.
The activists from "Last Generation" believe that millionaires and billionaires significantly contribute to climate change. They aim to reduce emissions by enacting necessary laws.
Despite their past attempt in June 2023, where they sprayed orange paint on a private jet and glued themselves to it, causing estimated damage of over one million euros, the climate initiative "Last Generation" continues their efforts against such carbon-intensive transportation.
