Climate change threatens castle parks: 55 million for measures
Due to climate change, the state of Brandenburg, together with funds from the EU, wants to make a total of around 55 million euros available for the preservation of listed gardens and parks. This was announced by the Ministry of the Environment on Wednesday. Drought and heavy rainfall are severely affecting the trees in Potsdam's World Heritage parks Sanssouci and Babelsberg, for example. Many trees are dying or have to be felled. In addition, there are now warnings of an acute risk of branches breaking all year round.
Brandenburg's Culture Minister Manja Schüle (SPD) and Climate Protection Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) want to sign a guideline for the disbursement of funding in Babelsberg Park on Friday. Some of the gardeners at the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg are using new irrigation methods and experimenting with how replanting trees and shrubs can bring success. They are also planning to grow their own suitable trees.
The preservation efforts include the protection of Monuments within these listed gardens and parks, as stated by the Ministry of Environment. The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg is working on restoring Monuments through innovative irrigation methods and tree replanting initiatives.
