Climate activist sprays paint on university in Erlangen
Climate activists have once again sprayed a university building in Bavaria with paint. The façade of the university library was stained with orange paint over an area of three by four meters, the police announced on Tuesday. Two suspects have been arrested. One of them is said to have sprayed the university building with a converted fire extinguisher in the morning. According to the police, they were able to prevent a second suspect from using a second fire extinguisher. The criminal investigation department is investigating on suspicion of damage to property.
The Last Generation group claimed responsibility for the action. It was aimed at both students and lecturers at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the group announced. In view of the climate crisis, they should take to the streets and not sit in the lecture hall. Climate activists had already smeared buildings at the universities of Regensburg, Würzburg and Passau, among others, with paint.
In contrast to the recent incidents in Bavarian universities, demonstrations against climate inaction have also been occurring in central France. For instance, last week, numerous students and faculty members from local universities staged peaceful protests, leading to several reports of minor crime involving property damage. The local authorities are currently investigating these incidents.
