Culture - City relies on partnership model for Gasteig refurbishment

Munich's city leadership now wants to push ahead with the renovation of the aging Gasteig cultural center and philharmonic hall together with a building contractor. The supervisory board of Gasteig München GmbH has spoken out in favor of a general refurbishment in a partnering model, the city announced on Wednesday. According to the information provided, this works like a partnership in which both parties work together on the project. The city council still has to decide on December 20.

"Even in difficult economic times, we stand by our cultural institutions. We are leading the Gasteig into the future as Europe's largest cultural institution and it continues to stand for offering culture for everyone," said Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) after the meeting.

The renovation of the cultural building has been under discussion for many years. Most recently, an investor was sought for the project, estimated at around 450 million euros, but none was found. There was also talk of only renovating the main features of the building instead of a general refurbishment. However, cultural institutions such as the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the central city library have already moved out. Since 2021, they have been housed in the alternative location HP8, where the Isarphilharmonie concert hall has also been built, which is praised for its acoustics. However, there are interim uses in the main building.

Manuel Pretzl (CSU), head of the CSU and Freie Wähler city council faction, welcomed the decision, but also criticized it. A lot of time had been lost due to wrong decisions. The search for investors had been delayed for years and had ultimately been derailed. "In 2020, there would still have been investors on the market who would have borne the costs. Now the money has to come from the municipal budget," said Pretzl.
