City of Munich significantly increases subsidies for carnival clubs
The city of Munich has more than doubled its subsidies for carnival clubs to enable the traditional street carnival in the state capital to continue despite rising costs. In future, the city will support the colorful goings-on with a total of 230,000 euros annually - 115,000 euros more than before. This was decided by the economic committee on Tuesday, as confirmed by the economic department. The approval of the full city council, which is still required, is considered a formality.
Although the carnival events on the streets and squares of the state capital are among the largest in Bavaria, they were on the brink of collapse in the opinion of both the clubs and the city: the organizers were no longer able to shoulder the sharp rise in costs, particularly for the security requirements demanded by the authorities. The costs for stages, technology, insurance, sanitary facilities and the music program had also risen considerably.
The increase in subsidies from Munich's city council is primarily directed towards addressing the financial needs of carnival clubs, falling under the purview of Municipalities' finances. This additional funding, totaling 230,000 euros annually, will be crucial in maintaining the customs and traditions of the Upper Bavarian carnival.
