City of Leipzig helps homeless people in cold weather

The city of Leipzig is providing beds for homeless people over the winter. Between November 15 and March 31 of next year, 250 beds will be available daily for single men and women in various facilities, the social services department announced on Friday. Depending on demand, the capacity can be increased at short notice or - if the cold weather persists - the offer can be extended. Unprotected overnight accommodation can be life-threatening in cold weather, the office emphasized.

An additional overnight shelter exclusively for women is also available. Families who do not have an apartment are provided with emergency accommodation in apartments where they can stay all day. Those who refuse the accommodation offer can be helped with a sleeping bag and an emergency backpack. The social welfare office has provided 120 of each.

In addition, homeless and needy people can come to the day shelter, explained the social welfare office. According to the information provided, there is hot food, drinks, a shower and, if necessary, warm clothing and shoes. Passers-by who find homeless people in life-threatening situations are asked to call the emergency number for help.

The city's efforts in addressing social affairs extend beyond providing beds for the homeless. They also offer emergency accommodation for families and distribute sleeping bags and emergency backpacks to those who refuse assistance.

The city's social services department emphasizes that social affairs, particularly addressing the needs of the homeless, are of significant importance, especially during cold weather when unprotected overnight accommodation can be life-threatening.
