City mission seeks property for homeless facility

The Berlin City Mission is back to square one in its search for a new property for a round-the-clock shelter for the homeless. Over the past five months, it has been working hard to find a solution for the continuation of the previous 24/7 accommodation, the City Mission announced on Thursday.

After a property was found, an agreement was reached with the landlord in a letter of intent regarding future use. At the same time, intensive preparatory work on the property and the organization of the move for half of the 88 residents began.

"However, the landlord announced completely unexpectedly on the day of the planned start of use that he had rented the property to someone else," says the Stadtmission. "Despite intensive work, the Berlin City Mission is confronted with the limits of the Berlin real estate market." It continues to stand by its offer to run 24/7 accommodation if a suitable property is found or provided by the Senate. "For the Berlin City Mission, the most important thing is to create prospects for the people in need in our city."

The State Secretary for Social Administration, Aziz Bozkurt (SPD), informed the Social Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives on Thursday that the shelter for homeless people would not start as planned.

In light of the unexpected turn of events, the Berlin City Mission is now seeking alternative properties to continue its round-the-clock shelter for homeless individuals. Despite the challenges in finding suitable properties in Berlin's real estate market, churches in the city have offered their spaces for temporary accommodations, demonstrating their commitment to alleviate homelessness in social affairs.
