Local Governments Restructure Operations - City Council's Interior Minister Ebling plans to take on the role.

Michael Ebling, Rhineland-Palatinate's Interior Minister and former Mayor of Mainz, is set to join the city council of the state capital. His involvement was revealed on Wednesday by a spokesperson from the ministry.

Previously, Ebling had confirmed he could run for the position without any legal concerns. Voters in Mainz use a system called panachage and cumulation, which allows them to distribute their votes to numerous candidates or to give multiple votes to a single candidate.

The SPD gained 19.5% of the votes in Mainz's recent municipal election, landing them in third place after the Greens with 24.8% and the CDU with 23.6%. This result means they will have 12 seats in the new city council. Originally placed at number 30 on the SPD's list for the election, Ebling managed to climb to number 4 due to increased support from voters.

Ebling himself spoke on Wednesday: "I'm thrilled about the strong backing and excited to be part of a remarkable Mainz SPD team. It's always wonderful to be able to lend a hand to my hometown." Alongside Ebling, another high-profile candidate on the SPD's list for the election, Finance Minister Doris Ahnen, failed to secure a place on the city council, placing 27th.
