German Second League - City council considers plan for constructing a 290 million stadium in Nuremberg.
Nuremberg's city and its football club, 1. FC Nuremberg, are working on revamping the Max-Morlock-Stadion at a cost of around 290 million euros. To make this happen, the city council is being urged to approve the next steps in the process. It was communicated by the city on Friday.
The stadium is no longer contemporary in terms of its infrastructure, and has been undergoing analysis for potential renovations for some time now. Mayor Marcus König discussed the plans, stating, "We're aiming to establish a 'Sport Campus' on the stadium grounds, featuring professional sports, recreational activities, and the most state-of-the-art stadium in Germany. Our aim is to provide benefits for the entire city."
The group in charge of the city and the club is advocating for a stadium with 40,000 seating spaces. When taking into account partially standing spaces, this translates to a capacity of approximately 46,000 to 50,000 spaces. The athletics track would be removed, allowing the ambulance to move closer to the field.
The price tag for this project is significantly higher than what was previously estimated in the feasibility study, as it had been anticipated that a smaller stadium capacity would be accomplished, and additional costs weren't considered. Since the city cannot afford this sum alone, the city council's approval is necessary for considering alternative financial sources.
During the June 19 meeting, the city council is scheduled to give its approval for additional planning stages. According to media reports, it might not be possible to realistically renovate the Max-Morlock-Stadion until the end of the decade.
