Litter on playgrounds - City cleaning is responsible for 135 playgrounds
The Berlin City Cleaning (BSR) will now be responsible for maintaining 102 parks and 135 playgrounds in all twelve districts. The state-owned company is thus responsible for 237 of the approximately 2,500 green areas. Previously, this was only the case for 164 areas, as BSR and the Senate departments for Economics and for the Environment and Climate Protection announced.
The newly added areas are those of "special significance for city cleanliness". For the majority of the green spaces and their maintenance, however, the districts are still responsible.
New tasks cost three million Euros per year
Your Senate department has strongly advocated for the expansion of tasks and the corresponding financial resources, said Economics Senator and BSR Supervisory Board Chairman Franziska Giffey (SPD). Three million Euros per year have been anchored in the current budget for this purpose.
The 135 playgrounds were selected by the Berlin districts under the leadership of the Environmental Administration. BSR employees are supposed to clean them as needed, depending on visitor numbers and the extent of contamination. Based on past experiences, the use of parks and green areas has increased and with it the amount of waste.
The Senate department, led by Franziska Giffey, advocated for the expansion of BSR's responsibilities to include maintaining the 135 playgrounds of significant importance for city cleanliness. These playgrounds, selected by Berlin's districts, will now be regularly cleaned by BSR employees, considering visitor numbers and waste levels. The Senate's decision to allocate three million Euros annually towards this expansion reflects their commitment to improving the environmental condition of the city's parks and playgrounds. The BSR, now responsible for maintaining a total of 237 green areas across all twelve districts, will play a crucial role in preserving Berlin's overall city cleanliness.
