Citizens' dialog planned on new prison building in the north of Halle
The state wants to inform the public about the planned new prison building in the north of Halle as part of a citizens' dialog. This Monday, the Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection in Magdeburg announced that the state of affairs will be explained and questions answered in the St. Pankratius church in Halle. The church has a capacity of around one hundred seats, it said. State Justice Minister Franziska Weidinger (CDU), State Secretary of Finance Rüdiger Malter and Halle's Mayor Egbert Geier (SPD) will reportedly take part.
Saxony-Anhalt is planning to build a new prison on an almost 17-hectare site in Halle-Tornau, not far from the A14 motorway. According to the plans, the building is due to open in 2029. The state has budgeted around 20 million euros for preparatory measures in the coming year. Around 400 places are to be created.
The citizens' dialog aims to discuss the impact of the new prison on the local community, emphasizing the need for justice and rehabilitation within the penal system. Additionally, the municipalities surrounding the proposed prison site should be involved in the discussions regarding the potential infrastructure changes and community services.
