"Mayors for peace" - Cities fly the flag for peace
In the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam and other places, mayors and mayors will place signs against war and for a world without atomic weapons in front of their town halls next week. On July 8, they will hoist the flags of "Mayors for Peace," an international association of cities.
This organization was founded in 1982 by the mayor of Hiroshima. "Given the background of the war in Ukraine and the overall geopolitical situation, this act is an important symbol," said Oberburgermeister Mike Schubert (SPD).
The "Mayors for Peace" (Mayors for Peace) remind us annually of a report from the International Court of Justice, stating that the threat or use of nuclear weapons violates international law.
According to the organization, around 600 cities in Germany will hoist the flag before their town halls on Monday. In Brandenburg, besides Potsdam, cities such as Brandenburg an der Havel, Neuruppin, Erkner, Hennigsdorf, Bad Belzig, and Seelow are participating. In Berlin, flags of the "Mayors for Peace" will also be hoisted in front of town halls in the districts.
The city of Potsdam, serving as the state capital of Brandenburg, is among the locations participating in this peace initiative. The international association of cities, known as "Mayors for Peace," originated from the municipality of Hiroshima, which has a significant history relating to conflicts. Despite the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical tensions, this peaceful action by mayors across Germany is seen as a significant symbol.
