Churches call for legal migration routes for climate refugees
On the occasion of the upcoming World Climate Conference in Dubai, the churches in Baden-Württemberg have called for the creation of legal migration routes for climate refugees. The conference offers a great opportunity to find solutions for climate-induced displacement, the four major churches explained on Thursday. The solutions must guarantee the protection of fundamental and human rights and focus on the needs of those affected, "especially people in the Global South who are particularly threatened by climate change".
The COP28 summit in the Arab Emirate of Dubai will be held from November 30 to December 12. Pope Francis also wants to attend for the first time.
The Archbishop of Freiburg, Stephan Burger, called for a legal basis to be created that would allow the victims of the climate crisis to settle in safe countries. "The industrialized countries in the global North, which have contributed significantly to man-made climate change, bear a special responsibility in this regard."
The Archbishop of Freiburg's call for a legal basis emphasizes the need for industrialized nations to provide legal migration routes for climate refugees, given their significant contributions to climate change. At the COP28 summit, discussions on addressing climate-induced migration and protecting the rights of refugees from climate-vulnerable regions are anticipated to be key topics.
