- Church in Lübeck facing substantial undertaking
The Lübeck Cathedral and St. Mary's Church are in dire need of restoration. They are iconic landmarks of Lübeck, known for their seven towering structures. However, the cathedral is displaying significant cracks in its towers, as mentioned by the Church Circle of Lübeck-Lauenburg.
On the other hand, St. Mary's is focusing on repairing its wall surfaces and faulty heating system, which has been malfunctioning since 2017. Experts approximate that the total expense for both restorations would be around 51 million euros. The church is responsible for funding half of these renovations.
The first phase of the cathedral tower restoration is estimated to cost approximately 3 million euros. The subsequent six phases are anticipated to range from nearly 2.7 to around 4 million euros each, as stated by the Church Circle.
As for St. Mary's, the interior and heating system are slated for renovation, with an estimated cost of around 28 million euros, according to St. Mary's pastor, Robert Pfeifer. He also mentioned that the federal government has agreed to provide half of this sum as a grant. The remaining 7 million euros will be covered by funds from foundations and donations from private individuals and corporations.
Pfeifer remains optimistic that the funding shortfall can be bridged. After all, it's not just about restoring the church building, but preserving Lübeck's renowned seven towers.
The Lübeck Cathedral and St. Mary's Church are integral parts of Lübeck's rich cultural heritage, both being renowned Church structures. Despite the significant repairs required, the Church Circle is actively seeking funding for the cathedral's restoration.
