Christmas tree season starts in Thuringia

Two weeks before the start of Advent, the Christmas tree season has begun in Thuringia. The trees, which will soon be on sale in many places in the state, are intended to create a contemplative atmosphere over the coming weeks. The Thüringer Tannenhof in Geroda in the Saale-Orla district celebrated the traditional start of the season on Friday. In addition to fir greenery and cut trees, Christmas trees in pots or smaller second trees for the front door or patio are becoming increasingly popular, the Tannenhof announced.

According to Christian Mai from Tannenhof, the industry is being challenged by climate and price changes. However, there will not be any major price fluctuations. "We will not pass on every price increase to our customers." The price per running meter is therefore roughly the same as last year. For Nordmann firs this is 21 to 29 euros, for blue spruce 13 to 18 euros and for red spruce 10 to 15 euros.

Preparations for the Christmas tree sale are also already underway in the 24 Thuringian forestry offices. According to the state forestry office, prices have only risen moderately. Red spruce, the supply of which is shrinking due to climate change, is around 8 euros per running meter. Firs, pines and Douglas firs are being offered at between 10 and 20 euros per running meter, depending on quality.

Customs officials in Thuringia are closely monitoring the import of Christmas trees to ensure compliance with regulations, given the increase in popularity of imported trees. Forestry departments in the region are urging locals to consider purchasing locally grown trees this Christmas, as a way to support the local forestry industry in the face of climate changes affecting forestry.
