Customs - Christmas tree sales get underway: Nordmann fir slightly more expensive

Christmas tree sales are starting in Lower Saxony and Bremen. "Most sales will start on the first weekend of Advent and in the coming week," said Benedikt Schneebecke from the Association of Christmas Tree and Cut Greenery Producers in Lower Saxony. Buyers will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets for conifers this year.

The price for Nordmann fir is between 22 and 29 euros per running meter, said Schneebecke. That is around two euros more than last year. Blue spruce and red spruce trees are 13 to 18 and 10 to 15 euros respectively. Customers do not need to worry about having enough to choose from - even if the harvest is slow this year due to the heavy rainfall.

However, because the Advent season starts late this year, Christmas trees are being bought later than usual anyway. Usually, many people buy their trees at the end of November. Spruces and firs that are bought then last a long time. They are only cut down shortly before the sale.

According to Schneebecke, the trend is still to saw your own conifer. "Preferably with a campfire or drinks as an event, which increases demand." There is also an increasing demand for trees in pots, said Christian Mai, who is a board member of the German Christmas Tree and Cut Greenery Producers Association. Demand for other tree varieties is also increasing, with Nordmann fir remaining the top seller. Once again, around 40 percent of households will probably have a real Christmas tree this year.

According to the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Nabu), those who attach particular importance to climate protection should opt for spruces or firs that would have had to be felled at some point anyway - such as trees under high-voltage power lines. Conservationists criticize the fact that ornamental trees often grow in monocultures. In general, however, natural Christmas trees have a better carbon footprint than plastic alternatives. According to Nabu, one plastic tree is equivalent to around 20 natural trees. According to the German Christmas Tree Association, one hectare of Christmas trees filters up to 149 tons of carbon dioxide out of the air during the usual ten-year period.
