Christmas tree in small town full of Nazi slogans

After debate about refugee home - Christmas tree in small town full of Nazi slogans

It is unclear who hung the disgusting slogans on the 20-metre-high fir tree in front of the town hall over the past few days. On Sunday afternoon, a woman noticed the racist notes and alerted the police. State security is investigating.

"There were more than 20 postcard-sized messages", explained a spokeswoman. "They contained photos and texts, some of which were hateful."

Mayor: "I am appalled"

It is not yet known when the notes were put up and how long they may have remained there unnoticed. Mayor Christian Grüschow (non-party): "I haven't seen them during the week, although I can see the tree from my window."

He himself only found out about the incidentfrom the policeon Sunday . "I am horrified. Especially as kindergarten children had made extra Christmas decorations for the tree, which we put up together before the first Advent."

The integrative daycare center of Lebenshilfe, among others, had responded to a call from the city to create weatherproof ornaments. Mayor Grüschow: "There is no place for xenophobia in Bützow!"

Debate about refugee home as motive?

Officers removed all the notes from the tree on Sunday. They are now to be forensically examined. But so far there are no leads on suspects.

It is possible that a failed referendum in November on plans to build a refugee shelter in the town of 8,000 inhabitants was the motive of right-wing extremists. The issue is whether Bützow should give the district an area of land or whether it should build next to a school. The town council voted on the matter on Monday evening.

Investigators are urgently looking for witnesses. Information can be obtained from the criminal investigation department in Rostock on 0381/4916-1616, from the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern police online watch or from any other police station.
