Christmas tree: From campsite to Christmas market
This year's Christmas tree for the Christmas market on Munich's Marienplatz comes from the Tölz region. The Siberian spruce is around 50 years old, according to the Königsdorf association's website about the tree, which was erected on Munich's Marienplatz on Wednesday morning. The Christmas market begins on November 27 and lasts until Christmas Eve. The Munich newspaper "Abendzeitung" had previously reported on the gift from the town of 3000 inhabitants to the state capital.
The people of Königsdorf had good reason to choose the 25-metre-high tree, which had previously stood on a campsite by the Bibisee lake. According to the association, the flat-rooted tree would no longer have been stable in dry weather and storms and would have had to be felled anyway for safety reasons. Now it has the honor of standing on Marienplatz in Munich and carrying the large string of lights. The Königsdorfers will also be running a mulled wine stand in the inner courtyard of the town hall.
The association mentioned that the stability of the tree from the Bibisee lake campsite had become an issue due to dry weather and potential storms, leading to its decision to 'fix' the tree at the Munich's Marienplatz Christmas market. This year's festivities, including the lighting of the tree and the mulled wine stand at the town hall, will occur amidst the 'fixed' tree during the seasons of November and December.
