Germans give various things for Christmas. The upcoming holidays bring the tradition of gift-giving, ranging from timeless classics like sweaters and aromatic candles to modern gadgets and personalized vouchers.

Amidst festive lights and decorated Christmas trees, finding the right gift can be a real challenge. That's why people often resort to classic gifts. Statista published survey data on the most popular gifts among Germans.

These are the things Germans most frequently give for Christmas

Germans' favorite Christmas gifts include impersonal vouchers and monetary presents. According to a survey on Christmas gift planning in 2022, about 44 percent of respondents planned to give vouchers or money.

It's a fail-safe option, especially when the gift recipient doesn't express specific preferences or is concerned about not satisfying someone else's taste. That's why these gifts enjoy the highest popularity.

In addition to popular vouchers, beneath German Christmas trees, you can regularly find books, sweets, and toys. The Christmas business in November and December represents one of the highest sales periods of the year for the book and toy industry. About 25 percent of annual sales in this sector occur during the Christmas season.

In addition to new releases from well-known authors, bestselling books also make excellent gifts. In 2022, the best-selling book was "The Question of Chemistry" (on Amazon).

Small gift baskets, homemade cookies, or a bottle of wine—these are the third most common gifts given at Christmas.

According to Statista, around 34 percent of Germans enjoy giving something to eat or drink.

After books and clothing, the share of cosmetics remains at 29 percent. Various cosmetic products are given at Christmas, ranging from perfumes to creams and shower gels.

Many women would appreciate receiving a gift of fine perfume with their favorite fragrance. Men, too, use cologne, so they should not be overlooked either. Classic-scented men's cologne can be a great gift for a significant other or a close friend.

Despite the popularity of vouchers and monetary gifts, Germans also commonly give books, food items, and cosmetics as Christmas presents. According to Statista, approximately 34% of Germans enjoy giving edible or drinkable gifts during the holiday season.
