Finances - "Christmas peace" for tax debtors in Brandenburg
The"Christmas truce" is a tradition of the tax offices in the state. Delinquent taxpayers in Brandenburg do not have to expect their tax debt to be enforced from December 22nd to 29th. Finance Minister Katrin Lange (SPD) explained on Friday in Potsdam: honest taxpayers can "trust that tax arrears will be collected consistently by the tax offices. Anything else would be unfair. ... But arrears are not enforced under the Christmas tree." Exceptions are only made if there would otherwise be a risk of a definitive tax loss, for example due to the statute of limitations.
The practice in the federal states varies. In Berlin, for example, defaulting taxpayers cannot hope for "Christmas peace". According to the Senate Finance Administration, the enforcement of claims continues there.
