Animal welfare - Christmas circus understands ban on lion show

The Wiesbaden Christmas Circus has reacted with understanding to the ban on its lion show. As animal welfare is the circus' top priority and the animal welfare regulations could not be adhered to by the trainer, the decision to take this step was made together with the veterinary office, the Weihnachtscircus announced on Thursday.

A spokesperson explained that the circus had received exemplary material from the animal trainer in advance about how the animals were kept. The contract with him was therefore concluded with a clear conscience. However, the current situation does not match the material provided. "We still stand behind the traditional circus, but under the conditions that guarantee animal-friendly husbandry," explained the Christmas Circus.

The veterinary office had found blatant deficiencies in animal welfare during inspections, as the state capital had announced. Among other things, the animal trainer was not sufficiently qualified to handle the animals. The accommodation of the lions also failed to meet the requirements.

The Wiesbaden Christmas Circus is scheduled to perform in the state capital until the beginning of January. In addition to artistic performances, the program also includes dressage with horses, dogs and camels.
