European Football Championship - Chips, tapas, beer, orange juice - full fan mile expected
A large football festival with a concert is expected at the Viertelfinal match between Germany and Spain (Kick-off 18.00 hours) in the evening at the large fan zones at Brandenburger Tor. Organizers and the police anticipate tens of thousands of fans and urged early arrival. "Regardless of who you are cheering for today at #ESPGER with chips, tapas, beer or orange juice (...) Make sure to get there early, then you will surely get a good spot on the #Fanzone", wrote the police on the internet.
Once again, several thousand policemen will be in action on Friday and Saturday to secure the fan zones and accompany the celebrations. Some areas were already closed before the start of previous Germany matches. Due to the large number of visitors, the entire fan mile area was expanded for all four games on Friday and Saturday.
More than 50,000 people are expected in this area, and over 10,000 more can fit in front of the large screens before the Reichstag building. The maximum capacity in this area is given as 70,000 people.
Additionally, at 16.00 hours, there will be a concert by the singer Peter Schilling, whose hit "Major Tom" with the line "Completely detached" became an unofficial Euro championship hymn.
On Saturday evening, the Olympic Stadium in Berlin will be the venue from 21.00 hours, where Turkey plays against the Netherlands. The organizers also expect a large crowd at Brandenburger Tor. Turkish and Dutch fans will celebrate before and after the game not only near the Ku'damm and the Messegelaende but also throughout the city.
The visit of the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Berlin for the Turkey game on Saturday is an additional challenge. Erdogan is among the endangered international government leaders, and he has a high security level. For his arrival, roads could be closed, and the Olympic Stadium and its surroundings will be secured.
