Equestrian sports - CHIO: Vogel ensures home victory in the Prize of Europe

The long wait for a home victory in the European Prize at Europe's most significant jumping event, the CHIO in Aachen, is over. Rider Richard Vogel from Marburg won the European Prize on Wednesday, riding Cepano Baloubet. In the second most important jump of the CHIO, Vogel secured the victory. The last home victory in the European Prize was achieved by Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum with her mare Shutterfly in 2011.

"We can't be disappointed this week," said Vogel to WDR. "I'm thrilled, no question." For the 27-year-old, it was his second victory on Wednesday in Soers, and there were also second places for German starter Danielle Goldstein.

Vogel won the European Prize after two rounds with the fastest error-free ride in the jump-off. Mclain Ward from the USA finished second with Callas. For the second-best German result, Jana Wargers from Emsdetten finished third with Dorette. "That's naturally a dream draw," said national trainer Otto Becker. "Except for McLain, it's all Germans behind. That's a very pleasant experience."

Among the prominent riders who failed were Marcus Ehning and Daniel Deußer. The 50-year-old from Borken, who had triumphed in the Grand Prix of Aachen last year, collected five faults riding Revere and missed the jump-off. Experienced rider Daniel Deußer also missed out with Killer Queen.

Vogel dominates the CHIO so far. He was responsible for the first success for the hosts in Aachen on the second day of the world's largest equestrian event. Vogel won a time jumping event on Phenyo's back, beating Irish rider Denis Lynch and Cornets Iberio by a margin. Mario Stevens from Molbergen finished fourth on Botakara.

Vogel had already been successful at this year's edition of the tournament in Aachen. He had come close to winning the opening event and finished second with Cydello. With the horse United Touch, the most successful German show jumper of the past months has already been nominated for the Olympics in Paris.

First Dressage Decision

Parallel to the European Prize, there was the first important decision in the Dressage Stadium. Charlotte Fry from Great Britain won the Grand Prix on her top horse Glamourdale with a significant lead. Isabell Werth finished second with Quantaz.

On Thursday, Werth rides her mare Wendy in the German team and fights for one of the two free spots in the German team for the Olympics in Paris. Later in the evening of the fourth tournament day, the German team of show jumpers competes in the Nations Cup. "We've made some plans," said national trainer Becker, looking ahead to the night jumping event.
