Health - Children's hospitals want to distribute free beds more quickly

The Bavarian children's hospitals want to prevent renewed overcrowding by allocating free beds to their young patients more quickly. An online information and exchange system called "virtual children's hospital" is intended to ensure that the 39 participating hospitals have an overview of available treatment places and can allocate them accordingly. "You get a quick overview of free capacities," explained Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) at the launch on Monday. "This can also avoid unnecessarily long journeys." The second step will be the establishment of a telemedicine network next year.

The project was initiated by the state association of senior paediatricians. "We have learned from the experiences of recent years and have taken action," explained its chairman, Professor Matthias Keller from the Dritter Orden Passau Children's Hospital.

Last winter, many children's hospitals across Germany were overloaded due to a wave of infections with the RS virus, with some hospitals running out of beds. According to Gerlach, there are no signs of a similarly dramatic situation this winter. "The infection situation is not currently a cause for concern," said Minister Gerlach. But we are taking the experience from last winter seriously."
