Without them, three children would not be alive: Because they rescued two five and six-year-old boys and an eight-year-old girl from drowning, Bremen's Interior Senator Ulrich Maurer honored three children, a teenager, and three adults with a public commendation.

On June 26th, dramatic scenes unfolded at the Grambke sports park lake: The 13-year-old friends Alessandro Fortino and Matti Wulf were playing in the water when they discovered three children floating motionless in the swimming area. When their cries for help went unnoticed, one of them fetched the other's 16-year-old sister. In the meantime, two children had already gone under. "That's when it started to click for me," said Alessandro. The boys dove in after the children and brought them up. The sister brought the children to shore.

Twelve-year-old performs CPR on eight-year-old

On the shore, 12-year-old Amira Bouslama realized the severity of the situation and began performing CPR on the eight-year-old. She had learned it in the youth fire department. "Then the girl opened her eyes again," she recalled.

Gina Marie Schmidt (22) and Daniela Jentsch (39) took care of the five-year-old. "The boy was already gone," Schmidt reported. Jentsch said she thought the child wouldn't survive. "It was very shocking," she said. Alexander Hamm (41) revived the third child. When the lifeguards from the DLRG station arrived, all the children had a pulse again.

Rescuers want to see the children again

The three were taken to the hospital by helicopter. The next day, they were already much better, said Andreas Callies from the Bremen rescue service. Alessandro said his greatest wish is to see the three children again.

The commendation recognition further highlighted the bravery of Alessandro Fortino, Matti Wulf, and their 16-year-old sister, as they were also acknowledged alongside the adults for their roles in the rescue with ['Awards and honours'] by Bremen's Interior Senator Ulrich Maurer.

Gina Marie Schmidt, Daniela Jentsch, and Alexander Hamm, who also played crucial roles in resuscitating and saving the children, can now add these ['Awards and honours'] to their reputations for their selfless acts.
