- Child drowned - Mother's case closed
Following the death of a two-year-old child who had fallen into the Weser in the Holzminden district, the public prosecutor's office in Hildesheim has discontinued proceedings against the mother. In light of the consequences of the act, punishment would not be appropriate, as the investigating authority announced. Therefore, with the consent of the local court, the proceedings have been discontinued. Negligent homicide due to breach of duty of care was considered as the charge.
Carried away by the current
The boy had fallen into the river in April near the town of Bodenwerder while walking along the Weser cycle path. The then 34-year-old woman reportedly immediately jumped into the river to rescue the child. However, the current carried her away, and she was unable to save her child.
Two witnesses noticed the emergency and called the rescue services. The woman managed to get to the bank and ran back to the scene with the witnesses. A firefighter who arrived as a first responder pulled the little boy out of the river. The firefighter and later other rescue workers attempted to revive the child, but all efforts were unsuccessful.
The two-year-old boy was swept away by the powerful current of the Weser, making it impossible for his mother to rescue him. Despite her frantic attempts, the strong water carried her away as well.
