Child cared for in accommodation: Resident attacks paramedics

A man has attacked rescue workers who were trying to help a seriously injured child in a refugee shelter in Ascheberg (Coesfeld district). The 37-year-old suspected attacker, who also lives in the accommodation, felt disturbed by the crying child and attacked the paramedics, police said on Saturday.

One of them stood protectively in front of his colleague, who was providing emergency care to the child, as the man approached, shouting and insulting. The attacker then punched the helper in the ribs and pushed him against a door frame so that he suffered a head injury and had to be treated in hospital after the incident on Friday evening. Firefighters managed to calm the situation and bring the intoxicated man to his senses. He is now facing criminal charges, according to reports.

The four-year-old child had previously suffered a serious eye injury from a lamppost, it was reported. The paramedics had also requested an emergency doctor due to the injury.

The incident at the refugee shelter highlighted the need for increased security measures during emergencies, as the paramedics also faced an unnecessary crime. Despite the harrowing situation, the bravery of the paramedics was evident as they continued to provide critical care, undeterred by the attacker.
