Chialo: Construction continues at the Komische Oper

What will happen to the Komische Oper? Will the renovation work be stopped? And will there then be a ruined building? The Senator for Culture disagrees - but also leaves a lot open.

Opera House - Chialo: Construction continues at the Komische Oper

Senator Joe Chialo has openly discussed the progress of the Comic Opera's renovation in Berlin-Mitte in the medium term. "At the moment, I can only say that if you pass by there, you will see lively construction sites," said the CDU politician in the House of Representatives in response to a question about whether the Comic Opera was at risk of becoming a construction site due to budget cuts. "And these active construction sites are not suspended and will not be suspended. And it is not our intention to do so."

The senator, however, avoided making a clear statement about the future use of the building after the renovations are completed. Chialo added that he would refer to the speech of Finance Senator Stefan Evers earlier in the state parliament, which would show Berlin's budget situation. "We have to make cuts between eight and twelve percent," said Chialo.

"We want to make our work"

And it should also be allowed to look into all areas and search for the most gentle and sensible savings opportunities. There will also be speculation in the future. "We will no longer comment on this from our side, but will say clearly: We want to make our work."

In several Berlin media, it was recently reported that due to the budget cuts of the black-red coalition, projects such as the renovation and modernization of the Comic Opera could be in danger. This is calculated to cost around 500 million euros. The Comic Opera ensemble is currently performing at the Schiller Theater in Charlottenburg due to the building works.

  1. Despite the budget cuts proposed by the black-red coalition, Senator Joe Chialo assured the House of Representatives that the renovation of the Comic Opera in Berlin-Mitte, a comic opera, will continue without interruption.
  2. Joe Chialo, a CDU politician, suggested that while they aim to make cuts to the budget, they will look into the Comic Opera Opera House's renovation project to find the most gentle and sensible savings opportunities.
  3. In response to rumors about the potential impact of budget cuts on the Comic Opera, Joe Chialo encouraged the media to focus on the fact that the CDU aims to continue the project, stating, "We want to make our work" at the Opera House.
