German basketball league - Chemnitz Niners fail to qualify for the final in Berlin.
The Chemnitz Niners basketball team didn't make it to the German championship final for the first time. Coach Rodrigo Pastore's team lost the crucial fifth and final match in the Best-of-Five series against Alba Berlin on Thursday with a score of 84-97 (53:48). The Niners had taken the lead in the series with a 2-1 advantage, but they couldn't capitalize on their chance.
As a result, Alba Berlin will now play against FC Bayern Munich for the title. The first game will take place on Saturday at 8:30 pm in the Bavarian capital. Matt Thomas (24) and Malte Delow (17) were the top performers for the hosts, with Kevin Yebo and Jeff Garrett (each scoring 16) leading the way for the Chemnitz squad.
The Niners started well against the Berlin team, including the two basketball stars Moritz and Franz Wagner, and were ahead 16:11 after six minutes. However, the home team took the lead with a 16:2 stretch that put them up 27:18 (9th). But the Saxons fought back and turned a 35:40 deficit (14th) into a 50:40 lead (18th).
The hosts were still ahead by one point, 74:73, going into the fourth quarter, but the tide turned. The Albatrosses mounted a comeback and caught up, scoring ten points in a row (88:80, 37th) to secure victory.
The home team mainly benefited from their height advantage under the basket (38:29 rebounds) and a better three-point shooting percentage. Twelve of their 28 three-point attempts found their way into the Niners' net, while the Niners could only convert ten of their 31 attempts.
