Fiba Europe Cup - Chemnitz gets off to a furious start in the intermediate round
The Niners Chemnitz got off to an impressive start in the intermediate round of the Fiba Europe Cup. The basketball team of Head Coach Rodrigo Pastore defeated Italian first-division club Itelyum Varese by 109:85 (62:41) on home court on Wednesday to celebrate its 17th success in a row in all competitions. The home side had six players in double figures: Kevin Yebo (27 points), Jeffery Garrett (20), Ousman Krubally (14), DeAndre Lansdowne (13), Wesley van Beck (12) and Aher Uguak (11). Olivier Hanlan (28), Tomas Woldetensae (15), Vincent Shahid and Gabe Brown (13 each) scored the most points for the Italians.
The home side rolled over their opponents in the first quarter. The Niners pulled away from 13:12 (4th minute) with a 17:1 run to 30:14 in the space of four minutes and were ahead by 20 points for the first time (46:25 after a quarter of an hour). The visitors braced themselves against the threat of defeat and fought their way back to 74:82 by the 31st minute.
The Saxons broke their opponents' morale with another spurt to make it 92:75 in the 34th minute. The home side benefited in particular from its dominance under the baskets (46:28 rebounds).
