Chemnitz - Chemicals used in apartment building: tenants return

An operation involving large quantities of chemicals in an apartment in Chemnitz kept the police and fire department on their toes for more than 24 hours. The residents of the house and two neighboring apartment buildings on Kaßberg were evacuated on Thursday. They had to spend the night with friends and relatives. Thirty-two people were affected. They were able to return on Friday morning after the adjoining rooms in the house had also been cleared, as a police spokesperson explained. No further dangerous substances were found in the attic or the cellar.

There had already been an evacuation on the Kaßberg four weeks ago. The 70-year-old resident was found dead in the apartment in mid-November. Chemicals were then discovered there. Now there was another operation on Thursday, during which further substances were discovered in several hiding places. Specialists from the State Office of Criminal Investigation confirmed the suspicion that explosive chemical mixtures were involved. According to the police, it is unclear why the man had stashed the chemicals in his apartment.

According to the information, another five kilograms of ammonium nitrate were found. The substance is used in agriculture as a fertilizer, but can also be used as an explosive. In 2020, for example, ammonium nitrate stored without safety precautions caused a devastating explosion in the port of the Lebanese city of Beirut. According to the police, the substances stored in the Chemnitz apartment were removed and rendered harmless.
