Check out the top movies and TV shows on Max this month.

In June, there are many great TV shows and movies coming to streaming service Max. Here are some of the most exciting ones:

Max's biggest release this month is season 2 of the popular fantasy series House of the Dragon. But don't miss out on smaller releases like surreal comedy Fantasmas and documentary series Ren Faire.

House of the Dragon, season 2

Fans of the hit fantasy series House of the Dragon are counting down the days until the second season lands on Max. The first season was a huge hit, earning a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 promises more action and intrigue, with Westeros on the brink of civil war and King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra fighting to sit on The Iron Throne. Start streaming on June 16.

Ren Faire

Another must-watch is the three-part docuseries Ren Faire. Like House of the Dragon, Ren Faire features characters fighting for power and control. The docuseries follows "King" George Coulam, founder of the Texas Renaissance Festival, which is the largest and most lucrative ren faire in the world. As Coulam prepares to retire, his underlings vie for the chance to take over his multimillion-dollar business and the title of king. Start streaming on June 2.

Fantasmas

If you're into fantasy but not the sword-and-dragon thing, check out the surrealist comedy series Fantasmas. Created, directed, written, and starring Julio Torres, this show is a wildly imaginative ride. In the series, Torres searches for a missing earring while navigating magical, surreal, and hilarious situations. Start streaming on June 7.

Slave Play. Not a Movie. A Play

Slave Play by Jeremy O. Harris was one of the most acclaimed, provocative, and fearless plays to hit Broadway. This documentary takes you behind the scenes of the groundbreaking production, showing you the actors' workshops, run-throughs, and rehearsals that brought it to life. Harris also uses the documentary to comment on his own role in Slave Play. Start streaming on June 20.

One South: Portrait of a Psych Unit

Max's two-part original documentary One South gives viewers an inside look at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Queens, a psychiatric hospital for young adults in crisis. The series presents a portrait of patients dealing with depression, anxiety, and psychosis, as well as the mental health professionals who are dedicated to helping them. Start streaming on June 25.

Deadly Influence: The Social Media Murders, Season 1

For true crime fans, the new season of Deadly Influence is a must-see. This docuseries dives deep into the world of social media and unearths stories of mayhem and murder. Influencer culture, with its parasocial relationships and terminally online weirdos, often leads to some pretty strange crimes. Start streaming on June 3.

Last month's picks

Turtles all the Way Down

Based on the young adult novel by John Green, Turtles all the Way Down is a great choice for viewers who want a deeper coming-of-age story. The film follows high-schooler Aza Holmes, who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder. Her everyday experiences and milestones are shaped by her mental illness, like a first kiss involving a fear of bacterial infection. Early reviews of the film are positive, so it's definitely worth watching. Start streaming on May 2.

Hacks, Season 3

The HBO original show-biz comedy series Hacks earned a perfect 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first two seasons. Season 3 picks up a year after Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) went their separate ways. Deborah is now enjoying a career resurgence thanks to Ava's writing, while Ava is working on a Daily Show-like nightly comedy program. The unlikely duo ends up reuniting once again. Start streaming on May 2.

Stop Making Sense, a concert film Masterpiece by Jonah DeMme, is my favorite of all time. It's so amazing that if anyone disagrees with me, I'm prepared to fight them. To honor the 40th anniversary of its release, A24 has restored and remastered the movie for us to enjoy in a beautiful 4K vision of the Talking Heads at their peak. Watching this film with the New Wave band and funk legends like Bernie Worrell and Alex Weir is incredibly joyful.

Starts streaming May 3rd

Stax: Soulsville USA

If you've seen Stop Making Sense many times already, consider watching Stax: Soulsville USA, a four-part HBO original music documentary about the legendary Memphis record label. This label brought us Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The Staple Singers, and many more iconic artists.

Starts streaming May 20th

The Iron Claw

The Iron Claw, a movie about professional wrestling, received universal praise from critics but no Oscar nominations. This is quite surprising. The movie isn't just about wrestling but also about mourning, loss, and family resilience. It features amazing performances by Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson as the real-life Von Erich brothers, a wrestling dynasty plagued by so much tragedy it feels like they're cursed.

Starts streaming May 10th

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School

The first season of the Pretty Little Liars reboot is a rarity: A horror TV show that's actually good. So good, in fact, that show lovers at Bloody Disgusting named it "one of the best horror TV shows of the past two decades." Season 2, titled "Summer School," has high schoolers Tabby, Noa, Imogen, Faran, and Mouse attending school during summer. Their imagined season of romance and fun is disrupted by Bloody Rose, a mysterious knife-wielding murderer who truly loves testing their limits. If you enjoy genre-bending horror, this is for you.

Starts streaming May 9th

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School

On Sarah Silverman's humorous comedy-variety show, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, laugh as adorable animals perform tricks in the most idiotic ways. Performances by cats, dogs, camels, hamsters, foxes, and more amuse and delight. David Letterman, who introduced the idea of funny animal antics back in the '80s, takes on the role of executive producer for this joyful, mindless fun television show.

Starts streaming May 8th

MoviePass, MovieCrash

Despite seeming uninteresting on paper, a documentary about a now-defunct movie-ticket subscription service is a fascinating look at terrible business ventures, arrogance, and corporate deception. The creators of the service sadly watch as other executives lead the company toward certain doom.

Starts streaming May 29th

The Lighthouse (2019)

If you're into dark, confined filmmaking and you haven't seen director Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse, you're really missing out. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe portray isolated lighthouse keepers who drive each other crazy (possibly due to horniness). Shot in black-and-white, the film is a strange yet mesmerizing experience.

Starts streaming May 1st
