ChatGPT makes it onto the list of researchers of the year

Scientific papers, computer codes or funding applications: the influence of ChatGPT has also become an integral part of research. The chatbot is now even the first non-human scientist to appear on the list of the most relevant researchers of the year.

Every year, the science journal "Nature " presents a top 10 of the year's most influential researchers. This time, for the first time, someone who is not human at all is on the list: the AI-supported chatbot ChatGPT. "ChatGPT has dominated the news this year, and its influence is being felt across science - and society," said Richard Monastersky, editor-in-chief of Nature. With ten people listed alongside it, it's actually a top 11 this year.

The decision was made to include ChatGPT "to recognize the profound ways in which generative artificial intelligence is changing the development and progress of science," Monastersky said. An article in Nature said of ChatGPT: "He co-authored scientific papers - sometimes in secret. It made drafts for presentations, grant applications and courses, created computer codes and served as a sounding board for research ideas."

At the same time, however, ChatGPT also invented references and facts and spewed hate speech. "Above all, however, it stimulated people's imagination." It is still unclear what possibilities will result from ChatGPT-like systems in the future. "But the generative AI revolution has begun. And there is no turning back."

Lunar probe, nuclear fusion and mouse fathers

"Nature" also highlighted that several researchers on the list were part of teams, meaning they achieved important milestones together with others. Among the experts who shaped science in 2023 is Kalpana Kalahasti, deputy project leader of the Indian Space Agency's Chandrayaan-3 mission. The probe made India's first successful landing on the moon in August. Physicist Annie Kritcher, lead designer at the US National Ignition Facility, was also considered. At the beginning of December 2022, she succeeded for the first time in generating more energy from nuclear fusion than was directly injected by laser.

The team of developmental biologist Katsuhiko Hayashi from Osaka University in Japan succeeded in producing mouse pups from the cells of two male mice for the first time. For the mice with two biological fathers, skin cells from male animals were converted into egg cells that were fertilized with sperm from other males.

ChatGPT developer also on the list

Ilya Sutskever, chief scientist at OpenAI, was included in the "Nature" list as a pioneer of artificial intelligence. He played a central role in the development of ChatGPT and the language models on which the chatbot is based.

The list also includes the physician Halidou Tinto, who led clinical trials in Burkina Faso for the approval of a malaria vaccine. London-based cancer researcher Thomas Powles, whose team made progress in the treatment of certain types of cancer, and biochemist Svetlana Mojsov, who played a key role in the discovery of the hormone GLP-1, which underlies new anti-obesity drugs, were also listed.

Errors uncovered

"Nature" also included a researcher who helped uncover errors in a seemingly baffling result: physicist James Hamlin from the University of Florida, who had pointed out inconsistencies in a study on superconductivity at room temperature presented in early 2023. The study has since been withdrawn.

Two women were also included in the top 10 who do not conduct research themselves: Brazil's Environment Minister Marina Silva for measures against deforestation in the Amazon region and Eleni Myrivili, who supports countries at the United Nations in preparing for the destructive effects of climate change.

The influence of ChatGPT extends beyond mere chatbot interactions, as it has also started co-authoring scientific papers and drafting presentations, grant applications, and course materials for researchers. This AI model is even recognized by the science journal "Nature" as one of the year's most influential researchers, alongside human scientists.

Furthermore, Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist at OpenAI responsible for the development of ChatGPT, has also been included in the "Nature" list of researchers of the year for his contributions to the field of artificial intelligence.
