Mecklenburg Lake District - Charly Hübner and Caren Miosga read Uwe Johnson

Author Uwe Johnson would have turned 90 next year - to mark the occasion, a reading of his novel "Jahrestage" will be held in Neustrelitz with a prominent cast. Actor Charly Hübner and presenter Caren Miosga will offer an insight into the more than 1800-page work at the local Landestheater on December 19, as announced by Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz on Thursday.

Johnson (1934-1984) is one of the most important German writers of the 20th century. The chronicler of German-German history was connected to his native Mecklenburg throughout his life. Not only would he have turned 90 next year, but it will also be the 40th anniversary of his death.

Hübner comes from the region around Neustrelitz. Former "Tagesthemen" presenter Caren Miosga will present her new ARD political talk show named after her for the first time in January 2024 as the successor to "Anne Will". Both will be accompanied in Neustrelitz by Ninon Gloger on the piano. The event is sold out.

In the four-part novel "Anniversaries", the protagonist Gesine Cresspahl tells her ten-year-old daughter Marie about her own family history: life in Mecklenburg in the Weimar Republic, during Nazi rule, in the Soviet occupation zone and the first years in the GDR up to the suppression of the Prague Spring in August 1968.

At the same time, the novel depicts the everyday life of mother and daughter in the metropolis of New York, where they emigrated to in the 1950s, in the epochal year 1967/1968. In "Jahrestage", Uwe Johnson unfolds a unique panorama of German history in the 20th century - a "reading world tour" into the turbulent New York present of 1968 and at the same time into the story of a German family in the fictitious small town of Jerichow in Mecklenburg.

Further readings with Hübner and Miosga are also planned in Hamburg and Rostock. The unabridged reading is also available to buy.
