Heilbronn Regional Court - Charges brought against husband after fire leaves one dead
A good four months after the fire that left one dead in Marbach am Neckar (Ludwigsburg district), the public prosecutor's office has brought charges against the 28-year-old husband. He is said to have suffocated his wife and then set fire to the cellar of the apartment building in order to burn the body of his wife, also 28 years old, as the public prosecutor's office in Heilbronn announced on Monday. The prosecutors are accusing the man of manslaughter and also attempted murder of the residents of the apartment building as well as particularly serious arson.
The 28-year-old has not yet commented on the accusations, so an exact motive is not known. It is possible that his wife had separated from him and this could have been the background to the crime. Both the man and his wife were members of voluntary fire departments.
Residents of the apartment building had noticed heavy smoke on the night of August 6 and called the fire department. Around 40 residents had to leave the building - all of whom were unharmed. However, the body of the 28-year-old woman was found in the basement. The criminal investigation department provisionally arrested the husband on the same day. He has been in custody since then.
The Heilbronn Regional Court must now decide whether to open the main proceedings and decide on dates for the main trial.
