- Charges against teenagers after deadly attack outside kiosk
About two and a half months after a fatal attack on a 30-year-old outside a kiosk in Paderborn, the public prosecutor's office has filed charges against two suspects. The 16-year-old and an 18-year-old are accused of joint manslaughter, as the authority announced. Based on witness statements and video footage, the two were involved in the altercation on May 1st. They had turned themselves in to the police after a public appeal.
A third suspect was also sought, but the investigation against him was dropped, as he was not involved. "Due to the brutal execution of the crime, as described by witnesses and partially recorded on video, the public prosecutor's office assumes in the indictment that the suspects acted with intent to kill," it said in the statement.
Suspects are in custody
Earlier reports stated that the 18-year-old was a Tunisian and the 16-year-old a Moroccan. Both are in custody and, according to public prosecutor Kai Uwe Waschkies, are not commenting on the charges against them.
The victim, a 30-year-old man, was initially severely injured by blows and later by kicks to the head, and later died from his injuries. The kicks were inflicted while he was already on the ground.
The 18-year-old faces further charges of dangerous bodily harm on Paderborn city territory, which are also being prosecuted, the public prosecutor's office said. The district court in Paderborn will decide on this.
The two suspects, who turned themselves in to the police after a public appeal, are currently in custody. The police are also keeping the third suspect in custody due to their involvement in the investigation.
