The changes were announced on October 16 in Bonn by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
They apply to interns who will start vocational training from January 1 to December 31, 2024. However, some believe that this will still not be enough.
Expected Increases:
- 1st year of study – 649 euros;
- 2nd year of study – 766 euros;
- 3rd year of study – 876 euros;
- 4th year of study – 909 euros.
The unified minimum wage for learners is intended to increase the attractiveness of vocational training and, at the same time, ensure a basic standard. According to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, interns contribute to creating value and, therefore, deserve recognition.
From 2024, the salary in the first year of training will be adjusted annually. Interns in the second, third, and fourth years of training will receive higher remuneration to better reward their contribution to the company's success.
To get a better idea of the increase in payments, it is necessary to recall how much interns in the first year of training received before.
- In 2020, this amount was only 515 euros.
- Already in 2021, this amount was increased by 35 euros to 550.
- The following year, the amount was already 585 euros;
- In the current year 2023, it is 620 euros.
Many interns choose to work part-time alongside their studies to improve their financial situation. If the training contract does not stipulate otherwise, this is not a problem. From 2024, the salary limit for mini-jobbers will increase.
