Change of plan: Better connections in Franconia and Upper Palatinate
Rail services in Upper Franconia, the Upper Palatinate and eastern Middle Franconia will be significantly expanded with the timetable change on December 10. More and more modern trains will be running on many routes in future, as the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) announced in Munich on Monday. According to the company, a Franconia-Thuringia Express will run every half hour on all days between Nuremberg and Bamberg, the busiest rail route in northern Bavaria.
From December, more spacious, barrier-free Siemens Desiro HC trains will be used between Nuremberg and Bamberg and on to Thuringia. According to BEG, the new Desiro HC trains will also be used on the Bamberg-Schweinfurt-Würzburg and Lichtenfels-Coburg-Sonneberg lines from December 10.
After the timetable change, up to three trains per hour will be in operation on sections of the S-Bahn Line 1 between Nuremberg and Bamberg. This will give the large district town of Forchheim a 20-minute interval with the S-Bahn in the direction of Erlangen and Nuremberg. However, the Nuremberg-Bamberg line will be closed from December 10 to 16 due to work on the four-track extension. The improvements will therefore be a week late.
A half-hourly service will be introduced between Nuremberg and Bayreuth with the timetable change, as announced by BEG. In future, Bamberg will have an hourly service in the direction of Bayreuth, Hof and Kulmbach. Previously, there was only a direct connection every two hours on these routes.
The northern and eastern Upper Palatinate will be better connected to Nuremberg with the new timetable, the Bavarian Railway Company announced. On the Nuremberg-Amberg-Schwandorf and Nuremberg-Weiden-Neustadt/Waldnaab routes, there will be a continuous service until midnight.
According to the BEG, Coburg station will be temporarily left behind. Due to infrastructure measures not being completed in time, the independent town on the border with Thuringia will lose its direct connection to Bayreuth via Lichtenfels by June 2024. Instead, trains on this route will turn around in the Coburg district of Creidlitz. Replacement buses will run from Coburg station to Creidlitz and Lichtenfels during the closure.
The Railroad company announced that the expansion of rail services in Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate will also include Central France, with modern trains running on certain routes from December 10. Due to these improvements, the Oberpfalz region in Bavaria will have better traffic connections with cities like Nuremberg and Bayreuth.
