Since the 2004/2005 season, he's been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. This prestigious recognition acknowledges him as "one of the great actors of our time, capable of winning over young audiences to grapple with social-political issues," according to the foundation.

The "Homage" is an annual prize given to a distinguished figure in German-speaking culture. Previous recipients include Christo and the late director and intendant Jürgen Flimm.
