The President of the Dresden Chamber of Crafts, Jörg Dittrich, has called on the Free State of Saxony to create more places in halls of residence for trainees. He was responding on Monday to an announcement by Saxony's Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU) that 1000 places in student residences could be renovated with the help of millions in federal funding.

"The funding for student residences is good and right. We would like to see similar efforts and support from the Free State and the Saxon local authorities for student halls of residence," said Dittrich. Apprentices are also dependent on affordable housing. However, this is lacking at many vocational school locations.

According to a survey, around a third of apprentices need accommodation at the location of their vocational school, the Chamber of Crafts reported. Many apprentices had to commute considerable distances. A quarter of all apprentices in Saxony travel more than 90 minutes to their vocational school. For a third, the journey from home to vocational school is longer than 50 kilometers.

Science Minister Gemkow announced last week that around 1000 places in student residences could be renovated with the help of the federal "Young Living" program. The money will be used to modernize halls of residence in Freiberg, Leipzig and Zwickau.
