Exhibition center - Ceremony marking the completion of construction at the mother-of-pearl experience center in Adorf.
A topping-out ceremony was held in Adorf, Vogtlandkreis, for the expansion of the "Perlmutter" experience center. The event was attended by State Minister for Regional Development, Thomas Schmidt (CDU), who shared his excitement about the project, stating, "This project is all about winners: tourists who get to experience something unique, a city that is revitalized, and a story that can be told again." The mayor of Adorf, Rico Schmidt (SPD), also showed his anticipation, expressing that he looks forward to the opening in the coming year.
For a budget of 5.5 million euros, an experience center is being constructed in Adorf, focusing on the endangered river pearl mussel and its valuable products - the lustrous material of mother-of-pearl is sourced from the inner shell of the mussels. Adorf's collection boasts thousands of exhibits, but only 30% can be displayed due to space constraints in the city's historical buildings. To solve this issue, the existing Perlmutter and Homeland Museum will be connected to a sanitized ancillary building and an additional new structure.
As recent as the 1920s, Adorf thrived as a hub of mother-of-pearl production, with up to 1,000 individuals employed in making mother-of-pearl jewelry, buttons, or inlays. The region's small mountain streams were considered significant breeding grounds for the river pearl mussel. The term "mother-of-pearl" for the material is a common expression which derives directly from "mother of the pearl".
