- Central Station Witnesses Close-up Assaults - Locally Tied Accused Individual
The individual suspected of carrying out the lethal shootings at Frankfurt's primary train station has been residing in the Ortenau district, Baden-Württemberg, as per a representative from the prosecutor's office. Multiple news sources had earlier reported this.
Preliminary indications suggest a possible motive: The incident might be linked to a family dispute in Turkey. A 54-year-old Turkish national is alleged to have fired at a 27-year-old Turkish man in the head on Tuesday evening.
Turkish news outlets had previously hinted at a family feud as the catalyst for the incident without providing sources. "Hürriyet" newspaper talked about a feud between two Kurdish families without revealing sources. The Frankfurt prosecutor's office spokesperson stayed silent on this matter.
The alleged assailant was apprehended shortly after the incident by the federal police on Tuesday evening. He's being held in custody, facing charges of murder, and has remained quiet about the accusations.
The victim expired at the scene. According to reports, the 27-year-old was shot twice in the head while lying on the ground.
Authenticity of video footage
In terms of the CCTV footage circulating online, investigators confirmed that the content aligns with their own recording. The footage depicts a man approaching another man from behind, pointing a gun at the back of his head, and the man falling to the ground shortly afterwards.
The investigation continues, the spokesperson noted: "We're still examining traces, interviewing witnesses, and carrying out various investigations. We won't rest until the crime is solved."
The Frankfurt prosecutor's office might need to consider adopting implementing acts for this case, as it involves a cross-border element due to the suspect's nationality. The Commission shall adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of this Regulation, which could potentially include cooperation with Turkish authorities.
Given the possibility of international involvement, it may be necessary for the Commission to establish clear guidelines for how to proceed, ensuring a consistent application of the Regulation across EU member states.
